Members at Tolosa Street have shown once again why it’s important to be a part of your union and to stand up for what is right.
When members received news that Tolosa Street was going to be outsourced to an NGO, they didn’t just resign themselves to going through the motions with the Department's plan. They contacted us and said, ‘Not again! ’
Even when they were told they wouldn’t be out of a job, they decided that they weren’t going to sit by and watch another public service be pushed into the private sector, and the Tasmanian community would be left the worse for it.
Instead, they stood together, organised their workplace, and took industrial action multiple times over the last couple of months to ensure that they could save the facility that they know is vital to mental health services in Tasmania.
Today, we’ve received confirmation from the Premier that he had heard their voices loud and clear, along with all of the members of the wider community who had come out in support of the members. And the Department would not be continuing with its plan to outsource the services.
This is a massive win for the members at Tolosa Street, but also for the Tasmanian Community.
No matter what happens with the upcoming election, the most important thing you can do is to be a part of the Union. We will always continue to advocate along with our members for better working conditions and what the Tasmanian community needs.
